Southlake Tutoring Academy

July 2022 - July 2023

Working at Southlake Tutoring Academy (STA) in the summer of 2022 was one of the most rewarding and transformative experiences of my life. Initially, I joined as an afterschool teacher, teaming up with a colleague to oversee a lively group of 30 to 50 kids. Our days were structured but brimming with energy: homework time, snack breaks, and play sessions. My role wasn’t just about supervision—it was about connection. I kept a watchful eye to ensure everyone was safe and happy, but I also became their listener, their cheerleader, and sometimes even their playmate.

The joy these kids brought into my life was unparalleled. They would light up when they saw me, rushing over with hugs and stories about their day. Their enthusiasm was infectious, and I loved every moment spent with them.

However, the job wasn’t without its challenges. When STA’s Chinese teacher left, my boss turned to me, asking, “Hey Lulu... you know Chinese, right?” Before I knew it, I was in charge of teaching multiple classes of 3 to 6 students. The transition wasn’t easy.

Teaching and lesson planning were entirely new to me. I stumbled at first, experimenting with methods to engage the children and help them retain what I was teaching. Eventually, I found my groove, creating interactive, high-energy lesson plans that the kids adored. We didn’t just stick to the textbook—I introduced them to traditional Chinese poetry, sharing an integral piece of our culture. Watching them enjoy and learn from these lessons was incredibly fulfilling.

They genuinely enjoyed poetry, my heart is so happy  :,)

This job was a crash course in patience, leadership, and conflict resolution. Guiding young children—whether to share toys or embrace learning—taught me more than I ever imagined. By the end of my year at STA, I had grown in ways I didn’t think possible. I became a more responsible, compassionate person, capable of leading and connecting with others in meaningful ways.  The lessons I learned at STA will stay with me forever, shaping how I approach challenges and relationships.

For that, I’m endlessly grateful.
